Divine Election

Throughout Genesis, God proves to be loving towards the poor and those in his favor or apart of covenants. On the other hand, He is unforgiving towards those who break the covenant/those who aren't apart of it. In the beginning of Genesis, God elects particular people to follow his command. While God does reward these people, He also does not protect or punishes those who are not in His favor, and there are consequences for those in favor if they fall out of God's graces.

Under the perception that God favors the poor and the disadvantaged, how should Christians today react to instances of poverty in current events?

Pope Francis wants to emphasize that we can not abandon those who have been marginalized. We pray for all those, especially, the poor, and also including refugees. Those who have been marginalized should be welcomed and comforted into our communities.
Pope Francis’ homily at Casa Santa Marta taught Christians more about the idea of charity. As Christians, we should not just give what is left is left over, but rather give what is one’s own. Giving to the poor what one may need for themselves will in turn enrich that individual because “Jesus Himself told us that He is in the poor person.”
